There are no cats in america

I Hear America Singing

fievel

4th period, today in class we talked about the American Dream in Fievel: An American Tale and in Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing.”  It would be helpful if you spoke to someone in 1st period.  Some things to think about:
1. What do the cats represent in the song?
2. Why do the mice want to come to America?
3. Are the streets in America really paved with cheese?
4. What does America represent to the mice?
Be sure to recognize the changing voices in the Fievel song.  These voices represent different ethnic groups.  They all want to come to the USA.

_______

In the Whitman poem, imagine different voices singing out.  The voices represent the individual, but the chorus represents the coming together of many nationalities to form one great nation.
