ABSTRACT: Samuelson (2014) suggests that a strong liberal education underpins the very essence of what it means to be a free person living in a democratic society.

PARAGRAPH: In order to be truly free, a citizen must know what it means to be free. This freedom exists only when a citizen has the opportunity to explore “the higher goods of human life: to play Beethoven, to study botany, to read Aristotle…” (Samuelson, 2014). If we reduce public education to mere career training, then we run the risk of maintaining ancient class divides in which the beauty of our history and culture belong only to those wealthy enough to afford them. Our culture has developed too much to allow art and music and literature to remain the privilege of the elite. When we strengthen our humanities education, we strengthen our citizens and our communities by allowing everyone to access the richness of the liberal arts.  The humanities nurture not just the mind, but also the soul and are the right and property of all citizens, rich or poor.
